The Institute of International Studies (IEI) at the University of Chile has launched a new book, Prospectiva de las Relaciones Internacionales. Escenarios presentes y futuros, edited by Professor Héctor Casanueva, Chair of the Chile Node of the Millennium Project and Coordinator of the IEI’s Chair of Strategic Foresight and International Relations. Based on the first Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Foresight applied to International Relations, the volume compiles lectures and contributions from experts analyzing current and future global scenarios.
The book underscores foresight as a methodology to anticipate crises, guide present-day decisions, and develop sustainable policies. Key topics include the fourth industrial revolution, technological innovation, climate change, China’s growing global influence, Europe’s strategic challenges, and new forms of strategic intelligence. Contributors also explore scenario-building, methodological approaches in foresight, and the intersection of generative AI and art in shaping collective futures. Among the contributors, Ibon Zugasti, Deputy Director of the Millennium Project and Chair of the Spain Node, provides a robust theoretical framework for understanding the prospective approach.
According to Professor Casanueva, the book represents “a commitment to thinking from our region and empowering institutions to anticipate challenges and design forward-looking policies.” The launch reaffirms the IEI’s dedication to fostering strategic thinking and promoting foresight as an essential tool for navigating complex, interconnected global dynamics.
