The final seminar video of the three-year research project T-winning Spaces 2035 is now available online. The approximately two-hour video presents the main results of the project, which explored the future of work and the transformation of workspaces in a rapidly changing world.
Led and coordinated by Aalto University in collaboration with the Helsinki Node of The Millennium Project, the T-winning Spaces 2035 project brought together an international research consortium to examine emerging work practices, hybrid and multi-local work, environmental and health impacts of digital work, and the evolving relationship between homes, offices, and alternative work environments.
The Millennium Project participated in the project as a collaborating network. Jerome Glenn, Executive Director of The Millennium Project, served as a Member of the Advisory Board and contributed to several project events and publications. Representatives from Millennium Project Nodes participated in interviews, events, and a Delphi study that informed the research outcomes.
The seminar opens with a presentation on radical futures of work by Professor Emerita Sirkka Heinonen, member of the Board of Directors and Co-Chair of the Helsinki Node of The Millennium Project, together with Riku Viitamäki and Veli Virmajoki from the Finland Futures Research Centre (FFRC), University of Turku. Their contribution explores futures of work through paradox probing and narratives and presents a new paradigm of hybrid, multi-local work based on Delphi results, including reflections from a Millennium Project session held at the FFRC Conference 2025 (report available).
The environmental and health impacts of digital work futures are addressed by Associate Professor Jonathon Taylor and the Urban Physics Research Group at Tampere University. Their research highlights opportunities to reduce emissions through decreased commuting, while also identifying potential risks such as reduced physical activity and rebound effects linked to digital work transitions.
Tips for thriving in the hybrid world are shared by Assistant Professor Saija Toivonen and the FutuRreresearch team at Aalto University. Drawing on interviews with Finnish organizations, the presentation underlines the need for more future-oriented workplace strategies and discusses the growing role of co-working spaces and alternative work environments.
The final presentation, by Professor Sofie Pelsmakers and the Sustainable Housing Design Research Group (ASUTUT) at Tampere University, focuses on what makes a “workhome.” The researchers introduce a spatial guidebook that presents innovative home and neighborhood designs supporting diverse work arrangements and aiming to enhance individual, community, and environmental well-being.
During the discussions between presentations, participants emphasized the complexity of the evolving nature of work and raised important questions related to justice, equity, and long-term societal impacts.
The video was produced by Drama Moving Pictures Helsinki Oy. Watch it on the T-winning Spaces 2035 website.
