World Futures Day 2026: Key Emerging Themes

On March 1, 2026, the thirteenth edition of World Futures Day brought together futurists, researchers, practitioners, and citizens from around the world in a continuous 24-hour conversation on possible and desirable futures.
Organized by The Millennium Project with support from leading international foresight organizations (APF, Humanity+, Lifeboat Foundation, WAAS, and WFSF), the event gathered more than 800 registered participants and over 300 active contributors, continuing its tradition as an open and inclusive global dialogue platform.
Artificial intelligence,and particularly the potential emergence of Artificial General Intelligence, was one of the dominant themes of this year’s discussions, with participants exploring its implications for knowledge systems, governance, and global power structures. Closely linked to this were debates on the urgent need for international coordination and regulatory frameworks capable of addressing rapidly evolving technologies.
Other recurring themes included widening inequalities in access to technological benefits, the accelerating climate crisis, and the transformation of social systems under conditions of increasing complexity and uncertainty. Education also emerged as a key concern, particularly its role in fostering futures literacy, critical thinking, and ethical awareness.
Geopolitical instability and tensions in global governance formed another major thread, alongside reflections on the importance of anticipatory approaches, scenario-building, and collective intelligence in navigating uncertain futures.
A notable development in 2026 was the expansion of linguistic and generational participation, with parallel Arabic and Spanish versions of World Futures Day, as well as the Young Voices initiative, which engaged younger generations in the global dialogue.
Overall, World Futures Day 2026 reaffirmed its role as a unique open platform for global futures thinking, bringing together diverse perspectives to reflect on and actively shape shared futures.
