The Millennium Project launches a new study on AGI Impacts on Social Coherence

The Millennium Project has officially launched an international futures research study assessing the potential impacts of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) on social coherence by 2035.

As rapid advancements in AI threaten to reshape human interactions, perceptions of reality, and societal structures, the study explores how we can increase the likelihood that AGI will enhance, rather than inhibit, social coherence by 2035

The results will be used to create alternative scenarios that will be given to The Millennium Project Node Chairs and Co-chairs around the world as inputs to the national workshops on these issues. The strategies recommended by the workshops to address future AGI impacts on social coherence will be the subject of additional RTDelphi studies to assess their effectiveness. All phases of this research will be combined into a report that will be distributed to political, business, academic, NGO, and UN leadership around the world.

This study assumes that a more coherent world has enough common narrative, that people feel they belong to the same humanity. This does not require cohesion, uniformity, and sameness; the elements of an opera are quite different, but make a coherent performance. Human interactions and perceptions of reality are affected by current AI and likely to be far more so by AGI by 2035.

The online consultation phases of the study are hosted on HalnyX, a proprietary Real-Time Delphi platform developed by 4CF The Futures Literacy Company, which serves as The Millennium Project’s Poland Node.

Researchers, AI ethicists, governance experts, and foresight professionals working on AGI and its social dimensions are invited to join the study panel. Interested experts can submit a brief overview of their work to Jerome C. Glenn, Executive Director of The Millennium Project, to request access to the HalnyX questionnaire platform.
