The global foresight and futures community recently paid tribute to Theodore J. (Ted) Gordon (1930–2024), co-founder of The Millennium Project and a foundational architect who helped transform futures research from speculative thinking into a rigorous, systematic discipline.
A recent commemorative article by Simone Di Zio, Italy Node Co-Chair, published in the prestigious academic journal Technological Forecasting & Social Change,, provides a profound assessment of his extraordinary intellectual and methodological legacy. This complements the vast global tribute held on the occasion of the 11th World Futures Day and recounted by Mara Di Berardo, Italy Node Co-Chair, in Futures Digest.
Ted Gordon’s career was a unique fusion of top-tier scientific rigor and humanistic ethics. Before becoming one of the founding fathers of modern futures studies, Gordon was literally a rocket scientist. At Douglas Aircraft, he served as Chief Engineer leading the department responsible for the development and launch of the third stage of the Saturn V rocket. This systemic mindset oriented toward complex problem-solving found new purpose when Gordon began collaborating with the RAND Corporation, co-founding the Institute for the Future (IFTF) in Silicon Valley, and establishing The Futures Group in 1971—one of the first for-profit foresight consultancies. In 1996, together with Jerome Glenn, he founded The Millennium Project, shaping it into a leading global think tank.
As highlighted in Technological Forecasting & Social Change, Gordon’s methodological innovations shaped contemporary foresight practice. These include the Real-Time Delphi developed with A. Pease to provide an efficient, nearly real-time, asynchronous method for expert consultation, Trend Impact Analysis and Cross-Impact Analysis created as systematic approaches to incorporate disruptive events and map interdependencies among future possibilities, and the State of the Future Index (SOFI) which provided model-based frameworks for tracking global progress and anticipating long-term societal changes. These pioneering methods are systematically compiled and published in The Millennium Project’s landmark collection, Futures Research Methodology, co-authored by Gordon.
Beyond his professional and technical achievements, Gordon was universally remembered as a “Gentle Giant”—a man defined by extraordinary warmth, humility, and a total absence of hubris. During the World Futures Day 2024 global tribute, his children (Katie, Tom, and Lisa) and colleagues from around the world painted an intimate portrait of a man driven by boundless curiosity and a deep sense of civic duty
Intellectually active until his final days, Gordon continued exploring the intersection of ethics, geopolitics, and AI to generate future scenarios, leaving behind a final peer-reviewed article on “Exploring a method to reduce inconsistency in the group Analytic Hierarchy Process using the Delphi method and Nudge theory“, published with Di Zio posthumously. As emphasized by the international community, Ted Gordon remains a guiding light: a pillar whose vision, humility, and rigor continue to inspire anyone working to build a better tomorrow.
