On 9–10 June 2026, the 26th Futures Conference will be held in Turku, Finland. The event is organised by the Finland Futures Research Centre, hosting the Helsinki Node of The Millennium Project, and the Finland Futures Academy (FFA), University of Turku, in collaboration with the Sustainability Transformations Doctoral Education Pilot (SusTra).
This year’s theme, “Sustainability, Temporalities and Futures”, focuses on how society can implement just and effective sustainability transformations by connecting long-term visions with everyday practices. A key highlight of the event will be the interactive workshops, designed to generate multidisciplinary and critical discussions between researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders from different backgrounds.
The conference will delve into critical questions regarding the fair and just implementation of sustainability transformations. Discussions will explore the link between long-term thinking and short-term decision-making, the ethical dimensions of temporalities, and the role of culture, art, and diverse knowledge systems as drivers of change. Participants will also examine how alternative economic models, such as post-growth or feminist economics, can support these transitions and how to identify weak signals and wild cards within the global sustainability landscape.
Among the speakers already announced is Associate Professor Dr. Geci Karuri-Sebina, Co-Chair of the Southern Africa Node of The Millennium Project from the Wits School of Governance, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Karuri-Sebina will deliver a keynote speech titled: “More than North Futures, More than South Possibilities”.
The final conference program will be announced shortly, following the selection of the abstracts and proposals received during the call for proposal.
