The Greek Node of the Millennium Project has contributed to a forward-looking study on the innovation and entrepreneurship environment in Central Macedonia by 2040. Recognizing that innovation profoundly impacts political, economic, social, and geostrategic dynamics worldwide, the Region of Central Macedonia closely monitored trends and variables that could support or hinder innovation development.
Through a participatory and dynamic Thematic Workshop, stakeholders from the public and private sectors, as well as citizens, explored the factors shaping the region’s innovation landscape. Participants identified key variables, examined their interactions, and provided the basis for the development of five alternative future scenarios: Development, Collapse, Transformation, and Discipline—that will guide regional innovation planning over the next fifteen years.
Building on these scenario-driven insights, the team formulated seven strategic policy recommendations to strengthen regional resilience and prepare communities for diverse conditions across alternative futures. The study also examined seven megatrends affecting innovation. The analysis highlights potential impacts such as digital transformation, evolving employment models, the rise of digital nomads, shifts in urban agriculture, pressures on social welfare and health systems, geopolitical turmoil, brain drain, stricter intellectual property and data protection laws, environmental regulations, and greenwashing.
This comprehensive research provides actionable insights for policymakers, businesses, and communities aiming to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in Central Macedonia while preparing for multiple possible futures.
